Is Death Your Savior?

If freedom from sin is only accomplished in death, then Jesus did a poor job of saving. 

If it's true that only after death we can be completely free from sin, wouldn't that make death our deliverance and the grim reaper our savior? 

Who is your Savior? 

Death/Mr. Reaper? 

or Jesus?

"He used His servant body to carry our sins to the cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way"- 1 peter 2:24


You no longer have a nature that is stuck in, or even prone to sin (Col 2:11, Rom 6, Ezekiel). Understanding this is paramount to walking and “reigning in life over sin”(Rom 5:17).

Without this understanding, you will literally sin by faith. 

Your faith in your sinfulness will produce exactly what you believe for. A thought (a seed) always produces after its kind. Or as Jesus puts it "as you think in your heart so are you."

Identity is made up of who we are and whom we believe ourselves to be, which always precedes our actions.

 Let’s just look at a small number of the promises given related to this topic:

You’re dead to sin and alive to God (Rom 6:11).

God is faithful and always provides a way out for you (1 Cor 10:13).

If you walk in the Spirit, you won’t gratify selfish desires (Gal 5:16).

When we are submitted to God, it causes a fleeing effect on our enemy (James 4:7).

Not only are you able to through Him, but also you are blessed when you are steadfast and receive a reward from Him (James 1:12).

If you belong to Christ, you have already died to the sinful desires once lurking in your members (Gal 5:24).

He actually prevents and keeps you from stumbling through His ability (Jude 1:22).

What freedom isn’t

It doesn’t mean you won’t ever make mistakes. We don’t expect a baby not to poop in their pants, but we do expect a child in middle school not to. Let's remove the crutch that empowers sin. It’s a travesty to the work of the cross to think you can’t help but sin. 

Jesus sacrifice wasn’t too weak to deliver.

 What does it mean to be free from sin?


“No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.”- 1 john 3:9

Romans 6:16 says, “You are a slave to whomever you obey.” This statement mirrors Jesus when He says in John 8:34, “Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.”

If we are free from sin, as Romans 6 and other passages state, that means we are free to not sin. We do not have to. God has given complete provision not to.

John is so sure of this that not only does he state, “Those who are born of God will not remain in sin” but also in 1 John 2:1, “My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin.” Following that statement with, “but if you do, we have an Advocate.”

To me, this sounds like the normal Christian life is meant to reign above sin, which is seen in Romans 6:12, “Do not LET sin…” To let or allow, you must have a choice. You are not hopelessly bound to sinning.

“What you believe to be true, even when untrue, has the ability to confirm itself. What you do and even feel is directly connected to what you believe. When we believe in what is true, we partner with God to reshape and mold our experience, which brings about victory.”- Taking Out the Fight

To live a life of freedom and victory over sin, we must first have our minds renewed to our empowerment not only just to choose, but our predisposition to choose correctly. “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” – Phil 2:13

I would encourage you to search out some of the passages that I referenced and let the Holy Spirit reveal these truths to you. There is so much liberty when we realize that Jesus actually really did set us free from sin. That whom the Son has set free is free indeed.

God Who?

God Who?

I am sure we can all relate to the peppering rain of trials, the rising streams of circumstances, and the winds of adversity wishing to overcome us. Maybe, you have even experienced a great crash. We all know what its like to feel the chilling, bitter winds of defeat and failure, but failures are simply invitations to try again. It is time to get up and rebuild from the ground up, from the inside out.

What we perceive, think, and believe about God is the most important thing about our lives. It is our starting place. A right image of God empowers our spiritual journey with never ending peace and joy, while a wrong image leaves our house desolate after the storm.

 “All the problems of heaven and earth, though they were to confront us together and at once, would be nothing compared with the overwhelming problem of God: That He is; what He is like…”- A. W Tozer

The Most Important Question

In Mark 16:13-20, Jesus turns to his disciples and asked, “Who do men say that I am?” Jesus than follows that question with the most paramount question of all, “Who do you say that I am?” There is perhaps no greater question posed to us today as Christian than this one.

Our starting point must be a right image of God.

 Doing construction work, I understand the importance of a starting point.  It means everything when laying down tile in a large room. You always start in the very center of the room. It’s a “from the inside out” kind of job. If your starting tiles are off, even slightly, it becomes more and more apparent as you expand and continue to tile the rest of the floor. A 1/24 inch off can easily become 2-3 inches as you start to build outwards. Wall tile is no different; an unleveled first row is amplified by each row after.

 Your starting place often designates your ending place, unless of course you adjust your course along the way. Jesus understood this as He spoke in Matthew 7:24-27:

 “A wise man builds his house upon the rock. The rain came down, the stream rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house; YET it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

 What about the one who didn’t have this starting place of building on the rock?

27 “The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

I would propose to you that this unshakable rock as a foundation is not just a cute thought. A right image of God is a rock.

The Psalmist declares,

 “He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.”

And in another place:

“For by You, I can run against a troop, by my God I can leap over a wall.

 As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven;
He is a shield to all who trust in Him.For who is God except the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?”

What does all this have to do with our image of God? Everyone knows God is the rock.

Remember the two questions Jesus asked His disciples? “Who do men say that I am?” and “Who do you say that I am?” Well, I believe the answer is in this section. The disciples answer the first question by telling Jesus three wrong images, three shakable images that are not worthy to be built upon.

“But who do you say I am?”

Peter replies, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

In which Jesus replies; “You are blessed, Simon, son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.

Now, I say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”- Matt 16

WOW!

This speaks volumes to me. Let me draw out a few things:

First, a true revelation of God comes from God, Himself. Many people build their houses upon what they have learned, but never known personally from Him.

Second, when you’re building on revelation, knowledge from God Himself is firm. The revelation of who He is cannot be overcome. Many times, we experience the collapse because we have never experientially known God in a particular area. We become anxious because we haven’t known Him as trust worthy. We panic because we do not yet know Him as faithful. We fear because we haven’t yet known Him as love.

It is so vital that we literally know Him. It is vital that we know Him for ourselves and allow Him to touch our hearts and reveal Himself as He truly is. Only a revelation that comes from Him ensures that nothing will prevail against us.

Lastly, true revelation of God is a key that empowers us to carry out everything we need to do.

These three things are intertwined. I must have a true revelation of who God is. This revelation must not be just broadly based, but in particular areas of my life. That very revelation in a specific area can only come from the Holy Spirit leading me into all truth, which will empower my life. I will find myself unshakable and empowered to make change and to change the world.

" Those who trust in the Lord will be like mount Zion they shall never be shaken."

Tapping Abundant Life

God has freely given everything, but with out our minds being renewed and coming into a place of agreement with Him in our thinking and believing, that richness of abundance that has been freely given is inaccessible.

An un-renewed mind is a mind not in alignment with God and it becomes a dam that hinders the flow of living water meant to flood our lives with everything He is.

So lets break the dam!

Natural parallel

 In comparison to modern oil drilling, early drills were slow and unable to tap the deep wells. Mass quantities of  “liquid gold” lay just below the surface. The abundance of wealth was literally there for the taking, but our limited technology at that time was ineffective in breaking thru to what lay beneath the surface. We needed an upgrade.

Same is true with our thinking. We need to be “renewed in the spirit of our minds.”(eph 4), to bring “every thought into obedience”(2 cor 10:5) with what has been given. 

We desperately need to encounter the One who is the Truth so that we may be set free from the smallness of our own thinking.

God has given

 2 Peter 1:3 tells us that, “His divine power has bestowed upon us all things that pertain to (or needed for) life and godliness.” Ephesians 1:3 declares that He has “blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing,” These are past tense, they are things that He has done.

Not only that, but we know from ps 34:10 that those who trust in Him are suppose to “lack no good thing.” The Lord doesn’t withhold any good things from us (ps84: 11). Instead, He gives us grace and glory so that we might be supplied “according to His riches in His glory”(phil 4:19)

God is not in question; the issue is not with God. It’s in our minds, our thinking and our beliefs. In much the same way that the issue wasn’t with the oil, but the drills used.

Scripture tells us “The carnal mind does not receive the things of the Spirit.” (1 cor 2:14). Romans 8 inform us, that our mindsets can actually be at enmity with God, opposed to Him.

So what’s the solution?

1Cor 2:10-12 gives us some answers. It says God has given you His spirit.

And what does His spirit do?

His Spirit will search out the deep and hidden things of God

AND reveal them to us so that “we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.”  Additionally, in v16, He declares why, so that we might have "the mind of Christ.”

The blessing of His mind which produces His abundance in our souls, is found in humbling our way of thinking. We need to offer our rationale, our intellect, our questions and reasoning.  Present them as a sacrifice to God and He will meet us with His mind, His thoughts, and His wisdom.

We need an upgrade in our thinking, so we to might be able to tap the abundance of the life of Christ inside of ourselves.
